KAA Gent draws 1-1 against SCR Altach

KAA Gent have drawn 1-1 against Austrian team SCR Altach in the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. Somewhat surprisingly it was the visiting team that took the lead after only 5 minutes when Ngwat-Mahop headed in the ball. After the early lead for Altach, Gent gradually took over command. Creating plenty of chances, the home team couldn't score and the woodwork even denied the Buffaloes twice from equalising. Only 15 minutes before the final whistle, substitute Kalifa Coulibaly equalised the score after coming on ten minutes earlier. Nicknamed 'Mr. Europe', the Malian giant scored his twelfth European goal in what was our first outing of the third successive European campaign. It could have all ended on a bright note if it weren't for summer signing Mamadou Sylla from Senegal hitting the woodwork for a third time with a free kick in the ultimate minute of the game.

The 1st of June 1952, the saddest day in our club history

Yesterday, 65 years ago, on the 1st of June 1952, our club La Gantoise lived one the saddest day in its history. That day, 34 supporters and their busdriver lost their lives in Gravelines (North of France). They were members of the supporters club “De Kleine Dokvrienden”(Stapelplein in Ghent).

On that ill-fated day they had organized a day trip to Cassel, Cap Gris Nez and Calais in the North of France. It was meant to be a compensation for a formerly abandoned matchday trip and it was offered by the buscompany “Flying Car”.

On the return journey the bus missed a corner just before it had to drive over a bridge and ran down into the water. The balance: 35 people had drowned after a terrible death struggle and only 15 passengers miraculously survived.

It was a shock for the city and the club. The funeral took place on the 7th of June. More than 60 000 fellow citizens and several delegations from football clubs and other cities came to pay their last respects and attended the funeral. The victims were buried on the Westerbegraafplaats after an impressive funeral march. Today we remember the victims of this terrible disaster and we think about the sorrow for the city and the club.

KAA Gent will never forget the Kleine Dokvrienden. The names of the victims were the first ones to be placed on our Remembrance Wall in the Ghelamco Arena and they will be eternally remembered.

May they rest in peace.

So we asked Yuya and despite his extremely busy schedule in the last week of the play-offs, he happily made some time for his little big fan Louis-Daichi!

KAA Gent part of the heritage of Wembley

From today on Wembley is not only part of our history but KAA Gent are now also officially part of the history of Wembley! We have received a mail from the FA ( Football Association) to inform us that the “new” Wembley stadium was opened exactly 10 years ago today ,Friday 19th May !

To commemorate this 10 years Anniversary the FA wanted to thank the 160 teams ( clubs and national teams) which have been playing in Wembley during this spell. As a result our club colours and our club crest have been shining on the mythical Wembley Arch this week.

To celebrate, The FA want to recognise every football team (club and international) who has played at the Stadium since its redevelopment in 2007, it is over 160 teams in total.  In acknowledgement and a show of gratitude, one evening next week The FA will be lighting up the stadium’s arch in the colours of every team and also displaying the KAA Gent crest and name on the outer LED screen.

"Good morning,

I’m writing on behalf of The Football Association to inform you that next Friday (19 May) marks the 10th year anniversary of the opening of the new Wembley Stadium.

As a participating team at Wembley in the last 10 years, we will be including you in these celebrations and wanted to make you aware of the activity in advance, so you could prepare accordingly.

We will be conducting photography and will next week provide you with a photograph of the stadium displaying the KAA Gent colours and crest on the outer screen and a press release explaining more. We’d warmly welcome you to display this across your channels on Friday 19 May as a mark of celebration.

Any questions at all, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Thanks,

Jeremy"
