KAA Gent's first home game of the season ended in disappointment. Moffi opened the scoring midway through the first half, and then Kortrijk sat back and defended their lead. It wasn't until after half time that the Buffalos got into their stride. Plastun headed them level, and they continued to press, but missed opportunities to take the lead. They were then hit by a sucker punch, when Van Der Bruggen scored at the end of a rare foray by the visitors. As Gent could not find an equaliser, they were left to rue an avoidable defeat.
KAA Gent started the new season with a bitter and avoidable defeat away at Sint-Truiden. Suzuki got the opening goal after just two minutes. Just before the break, Plastun headed in to put the Buffalos on level terms. Gent had the better of the second half, but Colidio capitalised on a catalogue of errors to score a second for the home side. Though Yaremchuk hit the post twice, Gent could not find an equaliser, so began the campaign with a defeat.
During this corona crisis, the KAA Gent Foundation wants to make the difference more than ever. Upon hearing the measures to contain the virus, the KAA Gent Foundation immediately changed its operations, in the service of society.
The Buffalos struggled against a hungry Charleroi side, who took the lead through Nicholson before Ilaimaharitra's penalty made it two on the stroke of half time. Early in the second half, Charleroi's keeper Penneteau was called into action a number of times, but then Fall got a third for the Zebras. Though substitute Niangbo pulled one back for the home side, Mohammadi was dismissed for a second yellow, and Rezaei made it 4-1 from the spot. With this win, Charleroi called an abrupt end to the Buffalos' unbeaten home run, which stretched back to May 2019.
The Buffalos enjoyed the worst possible luck at the start of their match away at Cercle Brugge. With just 30 seconds gone, a cross deflected off Castro-Montes, struck the post, hit Castro-Montes once again and rebounded into the net. After the first fifteen minutes, Gent were the better side, and made a number of chances, but could not find an equaliser. Ngadeu did score, but VAR incorrectly ruled it out for handball. The home side also found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed by VAR as De Belder was in an offside position. Cercle somehow held onto their lead, so the Buffalos finished the game empty-handed and disappointed to not have picked up at least a point.
In the second leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32, the Buffalos were unable to find the win they needed to qualify for the next round. David put Gent 1-0 up midway through the first half, but then Kluivert got a crucial away goal, making it 1-1 on the night and 2-1 to AS Roma on aggregate. Gent were the better team after that, but efforts from David and Odjidja went just wide, and Lopez saved the shots that were on target. So the game finished 1-1, meaning the Buffalos are out of Europe, though they can be proud of their performance.
KAA Gent strengthened their second spot in the table with a comfortable 4-1 victory over Sint-Truiden. The visitors were already two down after fifteen minutes, through a penalty from David and a great header from Kvilitaia. The home side continued to attack, and with 26 minutes on the clock David scored again. The striker completed his hat trick in the 63rd minute, and from that point a home win was never in any doubt, even when Suzuki pulled one back with a lovely strike.
In the first leg of the UEFA Europa League's Round of 32, the Buffalos went down to a narrow 1-0 defeat away at AS Roma. Perez put the home side ahead after just 13 minutes, but Gent were just as good as their opponents for the rest of the half, and after the break were actually the better side. However, despite making a handful of chances, the Buffalos were unable to score, so go into the second leg with a one goal deficit.
The game between Eupen and Gent got off to a hectic start. David opened the scoring for the visitors with five minutes gone, before Prevljak equalised a minute later. In the 12th minute David was on target again, with his fifteenth of the season, but Eupen once more got back on level terms, this time through Milicevic's deflected free kick. After that the goals seemed to have dried up, with De Wolf pulling off some great saves. But in the closing stages the Buffalos did manage to find a winner—Castro-Montes' smashing header condemned his old club to defeat.
Gent's home match against RSC Anderlecht was an open affair. The visitors enjoyed the rub of the green in the 14th minute, when the ball deflected off Colassin over goalkeeper Kaminski into the net. But the Buffalos got back on level pegging just 14 minutes later, through David's spot kick. In the second half there were few chances, and Kaminski and his opposite number Van Crombrugge proved equal to anything that was thrown at them. So the game ended all square, with both sides picking up a point.
The Buffalos got off to a dream start away at YR KV Mechelen, with Bezus scoring from a free kick in the first minute. The rest of the first half was an enjoyable affair, though neither side got on the scoresheet. Shortly after half time, David made it 0-2 to the visitors, and from then on the result never looked in doubt. Substitute Niangbo rounded off Gent's good day at the office with a third goal, deep into injury time.

Gent made a stonger start to the game, but when Genk carved out their first chance, Bongonda put the reigning champions in front. Yet the home side were not put off their stride, and created a series of opportunities. Firstly, Kums' beautiful volley was ruled out, but then on the stroke of half time Mohammadi got the deserved equaliser. The Buffalos continued to boss the game after the break, with Bezus making it 2-1, before lovely late strikes from Odjidja and debutant Niangbo sealed a spectacular win.
The Buffalos got off to a flying start against R Excel Mouscron in their first league match of 2020, with Depoitre scoring with just 9 minutes on the clock. After this, however, the visitors got more into the game, and early in the second half Osabutey made it all square. But then Gent found an extra gear, and David scored twice in four minutes to secure a 3-1 victory for the home side.
Playing away at R Standard de Liège, Gent had the lion's share of possession, but the first chances fell to the Rouches. As the first half drew to a close, Depoitre and Yaremchuk came close to getting an opening goal, but neither were able to score. After half time there were few good chances, until, with ten minutes left, Kums scored with a screamer into the top right corner. Standard could not find their way back into the game, so the Buffalos celebrated the end of 2019 with an important away win.
