KAA Gent eased through to the last sixteen of the Croky Cup. Playing away at Eendracht Aalst, Kvilitaia quickly opened the scoring for the Buffalos, and Gent dominated the rest of the half, though failed to put any more chances away. More goals came after the break, however. First, Kvilitaia got his second of the evening, and then Kubo scored with a beautiful strike just inside the near post to put the result beyond doubt. The fourth and final goal of the night came from the young Dylan Mbayo, who scored just five minutes after coming on for his debut.
Playing away at SV Zulte Waregem, Gent went behind early on to a beautiful volley from Seck, before Yaremchuk levelled from the spot. Halfway through the second half, Larin headed Zulte Waregem back into the lead, but Yaremchuk struck again to equalise for the Buffalos. In a tense last ten minutes, Odjidja got sent off, and Kubo hit the post in the dying seconds. But the game finished all square in the Regenboogstadion.
KAA Gent made an outstanding start to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. David opened the scoring after just two minutes, before Khazri got an excellent equaliser. Yet Gent went in at half time in front, after David got on the end of a smart back-heel from Depoitre. The result looked decided following a Saint-Etienne own goal with about an hour played, but then the away side got one back after Kaminski sliced at a back pass. However, the Buffalos held firm until the final whistle and so picked up a crucial three points—their eighth consecutive home win of the season.
KAA Gent further strengthened their strong home reputation with a convincing 3-0 win over YR KV Mechelen. The away fans were already quiet after half an hour, following goals from Yaremchuk and David, and then Depoitre made it three on the stroke of half time. Gent remained dominant in the second half and created a number of chances, but Thoelen prevented them from adding to the scoresheet. This fourth home victory in a row moves the Buffalos to fourth in the table.
On the sixth match day of the Jupiler Pro League, the Buffalos did it again in their own Ghelamco Arena. Depoitre gave the Buffalos an early lead against Cercle Bruges after eleven minutes, but Peeters quickly equalized. A strong Ghent side pushed on and before half an hour had been played, David had made the score 3-1 with two gems. And after the break, there were more opportunities to increase the score, but nothing came of them. On the contrary, in injury time, a deviated free kick from Peeters made it 3-2, but the visitors didn't go any further than that.
Having won the home tie 2-1, KAA Gent's 1-1 draw in the away leg in Croatia was enough for the Buffalos to progress to the group stage of the UEFA Europa League. HNK Rijeka took the lead after half an hour through Puljic, but Plastun equalised with a screamer just two minutes later, giving the Belgians a vital away goal. The match was tense until the final whistle, but neither side could find the back of the net again, meaning Gent's European adventure continues.
The Buffalos won their home UEFA Europa League play-off match against HNK Rijeka by 2 goals to 1. While Ghent dominated the game in the first half against the resolute Croats, Halilović was able to score for the visitors with their one chance of the half. After the break however, the Buffalos pulled back thanks to two thumping strikes from Depoitre. Ghent therefore goes to Croatia with a 2-1 lead and every chance of qualifying for the group stage.
On the fourth matchday of the Jupiler Pro League, Gent enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win over KV Oostende. Though they failed to find the net in the first half, they took the lead shortly after half time, when Yaremchuk scored from David's cross. Once David doubled the lead with a fantastic strike, the result was never in doubt, and the Buffalos came away with all three points.
After the 1-1 away draw against Larnaca, the Buffalos won the second leg 3-0 to go through to the play-off round of the UEFA Europa League. Gent created a hatful of chances in the first half but Ramirez was equal to everything thrown at him. With just over an hour played the home side broke the deadlock, with Depoitre's screamer into the top right corner. David added two more in injury time to give Gent a comfortable win. In the play-off round they will meet Croatian side HNK Rijeka
On the third matchday of the season, KAA Gent suffered their first defeat. Playing away at R Excel Mouscron, the Buffalos took the lead through an emphatic header from Depoitre, and Bezus almost doubled the advantage when he rattled the bar. But the home side hit back with two goals before half time: first Boya scored with a deflected effort, and then Campins finished sharply from a cross. In the second half, Mouscron defended their lead well, and though Kvilitaia thought he had equalised, he was adjudged to be just offside. The game ended 2-1, with the hosts taking all three points.
In the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, the Buffalos drew 1-1 away at AEK Larnaca. In a match played in oppressive heat, the Cypriots got off to the better start, but it was Gent who went into the break in the lead, thanks to Yaremchuk's goal from Dejaegere's assist. It looked like the men from Belgium would come away with the victory, but in the 88th minute Trickovski popped up to head home the equaliser.
The Buffalos enjoyed an emphatic victory in their first home match in the Jupiler Pro League this season. Within eight minutes, the home side were already two up, thanks to headed goals from corners by Plastun and Ngadeu. With little over half an hour on the clock, Bezus made it 3-0, and then Yaremchuk scored the fourth from the spot. Blondelle pulled one back for Eupen after half time, but Bezus and David put the icing on the Buffalos' cake in the closing stages, giving Gent a handsome 6-1 win.
KAA Gent are through to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League despite a 2-1 away defeat to Romanian side FC Viitorul Constanta. Yaremchuk put the Buffalos ahead in the first half, but after half time Viitorul were awarded two soft penalties, both of which Iancu converted. Gent got chances to equalise, but were not able to hit the back of the net. However, thanks to the Buffalos' 6-3 win in the first leg, their qualification for the next round was never in doubt. They will meet AEK Larnaca from Cyprus in the third qualifying round.
On the opening day of the Jupiler Pro League, the Buffalos, playing at the home of Sporting Charleroi, had a good opportunity to secure its first three points of the season after newcomer Ngadeu scored in the second half. However, Bruno equalised in the final minutes resulting in a share of the points for both teams.
In the Second Qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, KAA Ghent convincingly won its first match against the Romanian side FC Viitorul Constanta, 6 goals to 3. Despite the incredible heat, the Buffalos were on fire right from the start and scored through Asare and Dejaegere goals in the opening quarter of an hour. And yet even after Mladen’s excellent goal in reply, Ghent continued the onslaught as before half time, Kubo scored twice and Yaremchuk converted a penalty kick. Shortly after the break, Yaremchuk extended the lead still further to 6-1. Tiru then scored twice for Viitorul, making the final result a remarkable 6-3.
